Description

Maísa Edwards is a Joint International Relations PhD Candidate at King’s College London and the Universidade de São Paulo. In her presentation she will provide an overview of the ZOPACAS and explore its establishment in 1986 by the United Nations General Assembly, its principal commitments, its founding and current member states and its ministerial meetings. The presentation will furthermore set the ZOPACAS within the context of the Cold War and then compare and contrast it to NATO. Brazilian interests in the South Atlantic are subsequently examined as well as the ways in which the ZOPACAS plays a significant role in Brazil’s diplomatic and defence agenda.
