Organisation profile

The Film Studies Department at King’s College London is a leading centre for research on all aspects of cinema, from its earliest days to the present.

Our key areas of research include:

  • Asian cinema
  • European cinema
  • North American cinema

Research in these areas spans cultural-historical and theoretical and philosophical approaches, often bringing historical and theoretical ways of thinking about cinema into productive dialogue. Each of these research clusters supports investigation of all forms of film and new media: from silent cinema, to narrative features, documentary film, avant-garde and experimental film, and artists’ film in the gallery.

Shared areas of historical and theoretical inquiry include:

  • Changing patterns of film distribution and exhibition
  • The study of cities and regional centres in relation to film production and film culture
  • Institutional spaces and networks (film festivals, museums, and artist-run spaces)
  • Queer cinema
