Organisation profile

Research in health and disease is a key focus within Informatics, motivated by the increased interest in data-driven health, e.g. Learning Health Systems and research into computable phenotypes from heterogeneous data sources – Electronic Health Records, free text, images, sensor devices, IoT, and social networks. The Health hub is a networking instrument that aims to bridge activities in the Department with those in other parts of the College, as well as other national centres of activity and funding, including MRC, NIHR, CRUK and BBSRC. Members’ existing collaborations and partnerships include the Francis Crick Institute, KCL medical school divisions and centres (Genetics and Molecular Medicine, GSTT and SLAM BRCs) and London data-driven health initiatives such as Health Data Research UK London site and Digital Innovation Hubs. Three key research themes have been identified:

  • Molecular and Cellular Systems. We work on developing algorithms for supervised and unsupervised biomedical data analysis, data sharing, modelling and simulation of biological processes and sequence analysis for genomic data.
  • Health Informatics. Our work includes development of agent-based health systems and learning health systems, applying AI and reasoning systems in medicine natural language processing, learning health systems.
  • Robotics and telecommunication. We develop robotic technology for healthcare and medical interventions and design remote tele healthcare protocols and sensors for medical devices.

The Champions of the Health Hub are Sophia Tsoka and Vasa Curcin, and a full list of members can be found on the Hub website.
