Research interests

Alan’s research interests are in social and political philosophy, particularly in the areas of freedom, equality and global justice. His primary focus is on the civic republican idea of freedom as independence from arbitrary rule. He has special interests in Mary Wollstonecraft’s work and in nineteenth century slave narratives as political philosophy.

Biographical details

Alan received his MPhil in Philosophy at King’s before completing his PhD at Birkbeck in 2009. He has been teaching at King’s since 2010, lecturing on several modules within the MA in Global Ethics and Human Values. Before returning to academic life in 2002 he had a twelve year career in investment banking and management consulting, working for, amongst others, Arthur Andersen, Merrill Lynch and J.P. Morgan-Chase.
