I am a synthetic chemical biologist whose research spans fundamental questions in engineering biology about the hallmarks of life, genetic information storage and the evolution of biochemical function, and how we can engineer artifical biology, or 'xenobiology', towards applications in molecular medicine. My lab explores the selection and design of artificial analogues of DNA and RNA known as Xeno-Nucleic Acids (XNAs), synthetic polymers with properties beyond nature's genetic material.
