I research and teach comparative and international work and employment relations, with a particular focus on the Global South and multinational corporations. My work addresses three key dimensions:
My research is agenda setting and makes key interventions in labour process theory and institutional analysis. I draw upon history, political economy and labour process analysis to examine informal and precarious work, automation, climate change and sustainable work, migrant labour, job quality, and workers’ movements/organisations in the Global South, especially India and the Middle East.My current and developing focus is on the (1) impact of technology on workers and (2) informal workers, climate change and the challenges for a Just Transition.
I have a sustained track record of international research collaborations. I collaborate widely with researchers living and working across the Global South. Recent publications from these collaborations include books (2023, 2020) and themed journal special issues (2021, 2022).
I make a significant contribution to my discipline and am regularly invited to speak internationally at universities and public bodies, examine PhD theses, review for national research funders and academic book publishers, and guest edit journal special issues. I serve on the editorial boards of key journals, such as Work Employment and Society, Work in the Global Economy, Journal of Industrial Relations and Journal of Labor and Society. I am a member of British Sociological Association (BSA), British Universities Industrial Relations Association (BUIRA), and have a long-term association with the International Labour Process Conference (ILPC).
My research has demonstrable impact and relevance beyond academia in collaboration with policy makers, public bodies, and employers. I engage and collaborate with national government bodies, the ILO, Advisory Conciliation Arbitration Services (ACAS), UK, among others.
