Personal profile

Research interests

I am a social and cultural psychologist committed to understanding poverty, homelessness, and related social inequalities and injustices. In this area, my work explores the role of language in constructing and driving disadvantage, stigmatisation, and othering of people in these groups. I am also interested in understanding social epistemologies of health in poor communities.

In recent years, I have become interested in ethnocentric biases in qualitative research methodology and methods, along with using NLP and big data to explore collective psychological phenomena.

I welcome research students in the following areas

  • Experiences and representations of poverty, homelessness, deprivation and disadvantages
  • Social representations and public understanding of science
  • Qualitative approaches to examining perspectives on risk and trust in health
  • Analysis of text and networks including those on internet fora
  • Indigenous epistemologies and psychologies

I have a special interest in the Indian socio-cultural and political context.
