Research interests

My research is in conversation analysis and interactional linguistics. I explore spoken language, particularly the phonetics and phonology of natural conversation, cross-cultural comparisons and institutional interaction. For example, I have worked on prosodic alignment between speakers in naturally-occurring talk; on word linking in typologically different languages; on speech rhythm in different varieties of English; and on instructional interaction in music masterclasses. Currently, I am working on responses to news in English and Arabic, on the prosody of animal-directed speech, and on learning interactions in horse riding lessons.
