Research interests

My research takes a cognitive neuropsychiatric approach to the study of emotion regulation in healthy controls and clinical groups where these processes have gone awry. To this end, I have recently been granted a Varela award by the Mind and Life Institute to examine the influence of different types of self-processing on emotion regulation. I am also interested in the impact of these processes on empathy and emotion perception.

A further theme is functional neuronal development across the lifespan and the processes of neural plasticity, and I am involved in a project with Dr Chiara Nosarti, using fMRI to probe neural development in adults who were born premature or ’preterm’

My research tools are cognitive experimentation, psychophysiological measures, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI. We are also using functional MRI (fMRI) with rapid data transfer and analysis methods (real-time fMRI) in collaboration with the Centre for Neuroimaging Sciences at the IOP, and the University of Tubingen. This technique enables brain activation data to be fedback to participants a few seconds after data collection, in neural feedback paradigms.

Please see my website for more information about my research: http://www.em-online.org
