Emma Payne

I completed my undergraduate degree in Classics at Somerville College, Oxford and then moved to London for the MA + MSc programme in Conservation for Archaeology and Museums at UCL. I remained at UCL for my PhD, which explored the conservation and archaeological significance of plaster casts of ancient sculptures, focusing on the casts held by the Greek and Roman Department at the British Museum. I was then a Research Associate at the Institute of Classical Studies, London, before joining KCL as a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in September 2018.

My current project is ‘The Evolution of Technology and the Interpretation of Classical Sculpture’. By examining the impact of 19th-20th century technological change on the scholarly interpretation of ancient objects, this research will reveal the profound effect of advances in sculpture reproduction on the understanding of ancient sculpture, as well as exploring how new technologies continue to exert significant influence in this field.
