Security risks & governance of the life sciences and next generation biotech; biological weapons, bioterrorism & deliberate disease outbreaks; biological disarmament & non-proliferation; compliance assessment, transparency & trust; dual use research; responsible innovation & accountability; global health security & public health emergencies of international concern; AI & biodata.
Filippa Lentzos specialises in biological threats and how to guard against them. One strand of her work focuses on emerging technologies, governance and responsible innovation, focusing particularly on synthetic biology, artificial intelligence, deep learning and robotics. Another strand looks at information warfare and deliberate disinformation related to global health security. A third strand focuses on transparency, confidence-building and compliance assessment of biodefence programmes and high-risk bioscience (involving, for example, genome editing and potentially pandemic pathogens). Final strands of her work relate to biopreparedness, simulations and field exercises; the role of science fiction in conceptualizing biological threats; intelligence, biological threat assessment, and intelligence-academia engagement.
Her work involves sustained and in-depth engagement with scientists, governments, international organizations, and the United Nations.
