I obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree (first class with honours) at the University of Naples “Federico II” (Italy) with a thesis on “Eyelid myoclonia with absences: a well-defined idiopathic generalized epilepsy syndrome or a spectrum of photosensitive conditions?”.
I trained in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Naples “Federico II” focusing on neurodegenerative disease (Parkinson’s and Alzheimer). My thesis on the role of age of onset in Parkinson’s disease has been recently published on Neurology. I also obtained an MSc degree in Systematic review and Meta-Analysis at University of Milan.
I have worked extensively in the field of Movement Disorders and Dementia for eight years and I have also wide experience of methodology of clinical research and epidemiology, methodology of systematic reviews and meta-analysis of efficacy and diagnostic accuracy studies and analysis of the quality and reliability of medical literature.
I have been recently focussed on functional imaging and predominantly on the use of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) in Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease. I am currently doing a PhD on “Molecular, structural and metabolic in vivo markers in patients with Parkinson’s disease” at King’s College London, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN).
Using molecular PET and functional magnetic resonance imaging, my projects are focused on the analysis of the role of phosphodiesterases (PDE10A, PDE4 and PDE2) in neurodegenerative diseases and on the design of a new benchmark presymptomatic human model for Parkinson’s disease.
In my previous position as a fellow in the Department of Neurology at Imperial College London I have had the opportunity to deepen my knowledge in neuroimaging of neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory disease. I have learnt how to analyse PET and MRI data and I have improved my knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures. I have performed a neuroimaging project using [11C]-PHNO tracer in Parkinson's Disease patients with Dyskinesias. I was also involved in General Neurology and Movement Disorder/Deep brain stimulation outpatients’ clinics at Hammersmith and Charing Cross hospitals.
I have also attended some of the academic activities like weekly seminar and international conferences such as the 45th Ten-Day International Teaching Seminar on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention, the 18th International Congress of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders and the American Academy of Neurology AAN 2014. I have recently presented my scientific work at the American Academy of Neurology AAN 2014 (poster presentation: “Cholinesterase Inhibitors For Cognitive Impairment In Patients With Parkinson's Disease: A Meta-Analysis”).
I am also an active member of American Academy of Neurology (AAN), European Academy of Neurology (EAN) and Movement Disorder Society (MDS).
