Personal profile

Biographical details

I am Professor in Social & Psychiatric Epidemiology at King's College London (IoPPN) and an Honorary Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist.

My research interests centre on mental health inequalities. I use a range of methods- quantitative and mixed methods approaches, in my research. I previously led a six year programme of research relating to physical health in severe mental illnesses, with a focus on intersections with ethnicity and other inequalities. I was part of the evidence review and synthesis team which supported the development of WHO guidelines on the management of physical health conditions in adults with severe mental disorders, and have worked with OHID in England, on this area. Our team's focus has moved to examining the impact of COVID-19 on widening inequities in mental health.  I am also interested in the possibility of data linkage to maximise the potential of existing datasets, having led one of the first person-level database linkages of electronic mental health records (from  South London & Maudsley Trust-CRIS) to UK Census records, to better understand health inequalities in people living with psychosis. Our team has also developed novel text mining approaches to identify employment and occupations from free text in mental health records, to understand occupational inequalities experienced by people with mental health problems. I am the cohorts and statistics platform co-lead for the KCL ESRC Centre for Society and Mental Health.

My focus has recently shifted to the potential of large-scale and linked data to understand what can be done to prevent the onset of mental health problems, with a focus on population-level approaches. I am Co-Director of a national population mental health consortium as part of the recently established UKRI-funded Population Health Improvement-UK (PHI-UK) initiative.

I am a steering committee member for the national Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Surveys.
