Research interests

My current research is engaged with “critical war” and “critical terrorism” studies, in particular I examine the roles and portrayal of women in terrorism, counter-terrorism, and violent politics. My research work is motivated by a concern for the ways in which knowledge about the actors and activities of security/insecurity/war are organised and gendered. I am therefore concerned with issues of resistance and emancipation. This leads to three connected projects:

  • Assessing the impact of Counter-Terrorism and Counter-Radicalization measures on target communities, on human rights discourses and practices, and on security communities.
  • Theorising radicalization, resistance and political violence
  • Investigating Muslim women’s violent political activism in radicalized contexts
