Personal profile

Research interests

My research concentrates on medieval German literature, culture and thought. One main focus has been the group of Middle High German texts known as 'bridal-quest epic', which were the subject of my PhD and my first monograph, Bridal-Quest Epics in Medieval Germany: A Revisionary Approach

My current area of research is Early Middle High German literature (c. 1050-1170). I am particularly interested in the development of German as a literary language in the 11th and 12th centuries and its relationship with writings in Latin. One major focus is on confession; I am investigating the development and change of the penitential system in the 12th century and considering how thinking about confession, penance and sinfulness is expressed in poetic texts.

Biographical details

I studied German and Latin at Clare College Cambridge, where I stayed to take an MPhil and a PhD. In 2010 I was elected to the post of Powys Roberts Research Fellow at St Hugh's College Oxford, and I joined King's College London as Lecturer in German in 2012.
