Simon Weber

Simon Weber is a Ph.D. researcher in International Arbitration at The Dickson Poon School of Law under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Holger Hestermeyer. Simon’s doctoral project is titled: “Procedural Minimum Standards under the International Rule of Law and Article 6(1) European Convention on Human Rights in Investor-State Dispute Resolution".

Simon currently acts as Prof. J. Martin Hunter’s Research Assistant, supporting Prof. Hunter in his teachings as well as in his book projects on international arbitration (Redfern & Hunter on International Arbitration). Furthermore, Simon is assisting H.E. James R. Crawford in his arbitrations and private projects. Having interned with the arbitration department of a major French law firm he has experience in arbitrations under the ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICC and LCIA Rules. He has also been involved in ECT arbitrations.

Currently, he is a member of the Society of International Economic Law (SIEL), the European Society of International Law (ESIL), Young ICCA, ICC YAF (Young Arbitrators Forum), Young ICSID, Young CIArb and DIS40.

Simon is particularly interested in the procedural evolution of investment arbitration. His Ph.D. examines the question: ‘What are the procedural and institutional minimum standards in investor-State dispute resolution and is the current framework compliant with these standards?’. He has also written on the concept of moral damages in investment arbitration.

At King’s, Simon assists Prof. Dr. Holger Hestermeyer as Pathway Secretary for the King’s Forum on IDR. He has been serving as Social Secretary for the International Dispute Resolution LLM and, in addition, he used to be actively involved in IDR mooting. In 2017, he was part of the team representing The Dickson Poon School of Law at the annual Foreign Direct Investment Moot Court in Boston, which he coached from 2018-2020. Simon was the coach of the ELSA WTO moot team of 2018.

He studied law in a dual degree program at the University of Potsdam in conjunction with the Université Paris Nanterre and holds a 1st class LL.B. degree in German and French Law from the University of Potsdam and a Licence en Droit from Université Paris Nanterre. Further, Simon graduated with an upper 2nd class Master 1 degree in ‘Public International Law and European Law’ as well as an upper 2nd class Master 2 in Alternative Dispute Resolution and Arbitration from Université Paris Nanterre.

In 2017, he completed his LLM in International Dispute Resolution at The Dickson Poon School of Law focusing on International Arbitration, WTO Law and International Dispute Settlement in front of International Courts and Tribunals. Supervised by Prof. Dr. Federico Ortino, he analysed the procedural aspects of the new CETA investment tribunal in the broader context of international arbitration and international adjudication.

Previously Simon has been a recipient of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes) Fellowship and the German-French University (Deutsch-Französische Hochschule/Université Franco-Allemande) Fellowship.
