Research interests
The main focus of work in my research group is in identifying new targets for improving the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Targets of especial interest include metabotropic glutamate receptors which are present in key regions of the basal ganglia circuitry where they work to regulate neurotransmitter release from overactive pathways. Such targets may offer an alternative route to symptom relief and neuroprotection in this debilitating disease. We are also interested in finding ways to encourage repair of the damaged nigrostriatal tract. Current targets of interest in this capacity are growth factors like FGF20 and we are currently examining ways in which to boost brain levels of FGF20 in order to provide protection and repair to dopaminergic neurones in Parkinson's. We use a range of molecular, cellular and whole system approaches to address these issues.
