Abstract

Over the last decade, I have been actively seeking to implement genre-based writing instruction (GBWI) into my own teaching. In that time, I have often found it difficult to locate teacher resources to help me navigate the pedagogical transition from using more traditional writing teaching approaches to adopting genre-informed pedagogical practices. Although there are several published reports of researcher-practitioners adopting genre-based pedagogies, these have not always reflected the realities of teachers, both novice and experienced, who may not have received much, if any, formal education focused on GBWI and who may face significant institutional constraints that hamper the wholesale adoption of GBWI approaches. Those resources targeted to teachers new to genre and genre-based approaches have been scarce. After reading Genre Explained: Frequently Asked Questions and Answers about Genre-based Instruction, I am pleased to see that this might be changing.
