    Abstract

This work was the first to unravel the nature and origin of flow instabilities in mixing process vessels and quantify their frequency and magnitude; the findings enable a more assessment of the turbulence energy available for mixing and a prediction of the instability frequency. It has attracted much attention and discussion in the field (e.g. see Chem Eng Sci 59:951, 59:955, Chem Eng J 104:98, 99; Dr JC Middleton, [email protected], could comment on the work's impact/relevance on industrial mixing process design)..
