Cosimo Bartoli and the Language of Musical Experience in Sixteenth-Century Italy: Bartoli is shown as the first author in early modern Europe to have accorded instrumental music the status of deserving "attention"; the rhythmic freedom in Francesco da Milano's lute fantasies may have been the cause for this privilege.
