Abstract

This article sets out a brief history of cyberspace conflict, citing examples that are
significant in its evolution. It charts the enduring importance of information as a constituent part of warfare, through the development of the science of cybernetics, and the symbiotic relationship between the development of military systems and advances in computer technology. It examines the advent of Information Warfare and the ‘information-age paradox’ of opportunities afforded by technology, bringing with them a range of new threats. The article examines the rise of cyberspace as an operating environment, gives examples of operational cyber integration and discusses the development of the United Kingdom’s strategic approach. In doing so it attempts to highlight the need for detailed study of cyberspace history to inform strategy, concepts and doctrine.
