Abstract

It is surprising that there have not been more academic studies on the question of the Italian colonies from 1940 to 1952 for, early on, it was recognised by a contemporary commentator as 'one of the most complex and controversial issues in the history of post-war relations'. There is a need, in particular, for a re-examination of early British planning on this question during the period of Mussolini's war, from June 1940 to September 1943, when British military, political and diplomatic authorities deliberated on the terms of the armistice and eventual peace treaty with Italy and the general future of dependent territories. This article sets out to do this.
