Abstract

This essay seeks to introduce the renewed role of governance in management by adopting an open-systems approach. We discuss how governance plays a key role in current firm innovation efforts as well as how governance practices have evolved and needed to innovate as a result of major societal and economic transformations that are reflected in organizations. The aim of this essay is to bring together more recent leading advances in the fields of governance, strategy, and innovation to discuss the extent to which the institutional, technological, organizational, and competitive environments in which firms operate have changed, and the implications of these changes with regard to the complex interrelationships between innovation and corporate governance. This paper introduces the Symposium, which gathers critical essays on innovations in governance from different viewpoints and engaging interdisciplinary perspectives.
