'German Bel Canto': Nineteenth-Century German Singing Manuals in a Political Context

Abstract

Between the end of the eighteenth- and the beginning of the twentieth-century there was a steady decline in the appreciation of Italian singing and singing manuals among German composers and singing teachers. The musical alienation is shown to be part of a political development.
