Abstract
The energy states of the neutral isolated self-interstitial in diamond, I-0, show negligible linear response to perturbations. In this paper we combine uniaxial stress and isotope effects to study the interactions between the electronic states of I-0. We identify a fifth electronic state of the centre revealing two closely spaced doublets in the electronic energy level scheme of the defect. I-0 has a split- structure. We will show that in diamond this configuration is highly susceptible to two independent symmetry-lowering distortions; through a B-1 transformation to D-2 in the ground state and through a B-2 transformation to C-2v in the excited state.
