Abstract

In Kyrgyzstan, the BRI takes the form of a series of infrastructure projects covering transport and energy, which have the potential to increase connectivity and make the country an important node of transport and production in Central Asia. More broadly, Chinese investment and infrastructure projects have the potential to support the transformation of the Kyrgyz economy, but these opportunities come with risks. Our study maps the potential threats and economic risks faced by Kyrgyzstan in the context of the BRI. Based on primary data collected through key informant interviews, our study reviews the main risks posed by the BRI, and more broadly by Chinese economic engagement, to the country’s development process and it assesses how the risk perceptions influence risk management decisions.
