Abstract
Leadership continues to be an important facet of health care, particularly so in the NHS. With the roll out of the Health Visitor Implementation Plan (Department of Health, 2011) there has never been a more vital time for effective leadership
within health visiting. It is imperative that health visitors take on the role of effective leaders as ascribed to them, in order to continue to develop the profession in its unique right. This article explores the varying theories of leadership, discusses whether it can be learnt, and why leadership needs to be developed within health visiting.
