Ultrafast metamaterial optical modulator

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference paper

Abstract

In plasmonic metamaterials, light is usually coupled to surface plasmon-like modes that allow modification of both linear optical properties and enhance the metamaterial's effective nonlinearities. Recently plasmonic metamaterials based on nanorod arrays and split-ring resonators have indeed shown a strong and fast nonlinear behaviour. These fast nonlinearities have been attributed to the fast relaxation time of the conduction electrons in metals.
