Abstract
This chapter begins with a brief outline of changes in the ethnic makeup of the
UK population, looking at religious issues and the implications for health care in
general. The concepts of ‘cultural competence’ and ‘institutional discrimination’ are introduced, and the meaning of the term ‘diverse’ is discussed. The chapter then looks at cultural practices relevant to everyday health visiting practice, such as pregnancy, diet, customs relating to birth and naming, and mental health, with some examples. Finally, it looks at safeguarding in a multicultural setting, paying special attention to genital cutting or female genital mutilation (FGM), and makes a brief reference to matters of communication. Activities are provided to help you apply this information and approaches in your own life and work.
