Organisation profile

Mathematics has been studied at King’s College London throughout its history from 1830 onwards. The Department of Mathematics has established a record of accomplishments in pure and applied mathematics, and now has research groups in Analysis, Disordered Systems, Financial Mathematics, Geometry, Number Theory, Statistics and Theoretical Physics. It has 45 permanent academic staff members and teaches some 800 (undergraduate and postgraduate) students. Its degree programmes and lecture courses are strongly influenced by the various research interests and activities of its staff. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, it ranked fourth amongst mathematical sciences units in the UK in terms of the world-leading quality of its research outputs.

The Department of Mathematics is part of the Faculty Natural & Mathematical Sciences, which also incorporates the Departments of Informatics, of Physics and of Chemistry.
