Research interests

Carmine M. Pariante is Professor of Biological Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London, and Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

He investigates the role of stress and inflammation in the pathogenesis of mental disorders and in the response to psychotropic drugs, both in clinical samples and experimental settings.

He has published more that 450 papers; he is the appointed Editor in Chief on the journal Brain Behaviour and Immunity, and a Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher.

He has received numerous awards for his research, most recently the 2012 “Academic Psychiatrist of the Year” Award from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the 2015 Anna-Monika Prize for Research on Depression, the 2016 PNIRS Normal Cousins Award for Research in Psychoneuroimmunology, the 2017 Andrea Leadsom Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Infant Mental Health, the 2017 NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Award, and the 2022 Media Award from the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology. This last award recognises his public education activity through the digital mental health magazine he leads, Inspire the Mind (www.inspirethemind.org).

His dream is that new therapeutic tools targeting the stress and inflammatory systems will soon be available to alleviate the suffering of patients with mental health problems.
