Biographical details

Andre Strydom is a psychiatrist in Intellectual disabilities. Dr. Strydom's research has a specific focus on conditions associated with ageing in intellectual disability (ID) populations, such as Alzheimer's disease in individuals with Down Syndrome (DS). He is an expert in ageing-related issues in Down syndrome and the cognitive phenotype(s) associated with trisomy 21.

Current projects and collaborations include the LonDownS consortium initially funded by the Wellcome Trust to study the neurobiology of Alzheimer's Disease in Down syndrome, and now funded by the MRC, with a focus on MRI and plasma biomarker changes associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease in individuals with Down syndrome.  Working in close collaboration with colleagues in Europe within the HOrizon21 consortium, a major aim is to enable clinical trials for the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease in people with Down syndrome. As part of the Go-DS21 consortium funded by the EC, we are also studying metabolic and cardiovascular status of people with Down syndrome across the lifespan, with the aim to improve clinical guidance on management of these conditions.

Dr Strydom is the lead for KCL's LeDeR programme, tendered by NHSE to address inequalities in healthcare of people with a learning disability and autistic people.   He directs the NDD-Clinical trials unit, where we conduct trials of medications and complex interventions (both academic and industry sponsored) to improve conditions associated with intellectual disability, Down syndrome, autism, and fragile X syndrome.
