Research interests

My research adopts interdisciplinary approaches and mixed methods to address health inequalities across specialist mental health and community settings.  Our study designs make use of ethnography, interviews, participatory workshops, and video and film-making to explore the different ways in which complex economic, social and cultural phenomena may impact our mental health.  Current research projects include:

(i) ‘Mutual Aid, Mutual Experiences?  A comparative study of Mutual Aid groups and community mental health during the COVID-19 outbreak’ is a mixed methods study to explore how community-led Mutual Aid groups best respond to the local economic, social and health determinants of mental ill health, including economic deprivation, social isolation, food insecurity, disability, stigma and discrimination;

(ii) ‘Sound Young Minds: An Evaluation of Impact’ is an interdisciplinary study designed to evaluate the mechanisms of a complex music intervention in a hospital school setting.  Our research seeks to describe the phenomenology of the Music Residencies and to develop a robust methodology for evaluating these Music Residences and similar music interventions in mental health settings.
