Biographical details

After qualifying as a mental health nurse and working in community and inpatient mental health services, Debbie joined the IoPPN in 2002 where she completed an MSc and then a PhD in Health Service and Population Research.

Her current role involves development, implementation and evaluation of tobacco dependence treatment initiatives for smokers in the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. She is also a post doc researcher on the BEAT study, one of many projects within The Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) South London. This study aims to improve access and uptake of physical health interventions for people with psychosis, including developing and evaluating tobacco dependence treatment pathways and training interventions for staff.

Research interests

Previous research includes therapy and training RCTs in medication management and qualitative studies about patient’s experiences of antipsychotic medication. She has also conducted studies relating to improving the physical health and wellbeing of people with psychosis. Debbie’s PhD was a mixed methods study of the development and evaluation of a smoking cessation intervention for people with schizophrenia.

Debbie has experience of developing, evaluating and disseminating mental health related evidence based training locally, nationally and internationally. She has developed an online education course for smoking cessation in mental health with colleagues in SLAM and also had developed advanced skills training for treating tobacco dependence in mental health settings.
