Dr
Emanuele holds a PhD in biochemistry and has gained extensive knowledge in applied bioinformatics and cancer research through research activities carried out in biotech, pharma and academia.
He he has taken part and directed the development of open source and commercial software for the analysis of protein structures, microarray data, pathways and DNA polymorphisms and led a number of cancer targets, biomarkers and drug discovery programmes.
After several years in industry (LION Bioscience, Merck MRL), Emanuele joined the King’s College of London in 2009. There he was involved as a Team Leader in the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Unit (2009-2013), where he worked on the genomics and bioinformatics analysis of basal-like breast cancer and the identification of novel candidate targets and predictive biomarkers.
In 2013 he moved to the Biomedical Research Centre at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College London to head the group of Translational Bioinformatics. This is an inter-disciplinary team of bioinformaticians and computer scientists supporting and collaborating on translational and personalized medicine projects, all aimed at the dissection of molecular mechanisms underpinning diseases and the identification of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
Projects span different therapeutic areas and are based on the analysis of high-throughput molecular data, including next-generation sequencing of human and microbiomes, metabolomics, microarrays, flow- and mass-cytometry, in integration with clinical/pathological information.
His main topics of research are:
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
