Shouyu CHONG (he/him/his) is a PhD Student and Researcher at the Centre of Construction Law & Dispute Resolution, King's College London. Concurrently, he is a Research Fellow at the Singapore International Dispute Resolution Academy (SIDRA), Singapore Managment University (March 2020 - December 2027), and a Visiting Lecturer at the Dickson Poon School of Law, King's College London. As a Visiting Lecturer at King's, Shouyu teaches Trusts and International Commercial Law.

Between 2018 - 2019, Shouyu was a Research Consultant at SIDRA, where he established himself as a researcher in the area of private international law and cross-border alternative dispute resolution.

When SIDRA merged with the Singapore Management University, School of Law in 2019, Shouyu was appointed a Research Associate. In that capacity, his key research focus was centred on the Singapore Convention on Mediation. Since 2019, he has co-written two editions of The Singapore Convention on Mediation: A Commentary (Wolters Kluwer) (which is currently the lead academic authority on the Convention) and several other articles on the Singapore Convention. Since 2019, he is also the co-author of the Singapore Academy of Law's Annual Review of Mediation and ADR cases in Singapore. Additionally, Shouyu was consulted on an empirical research project that examines internationally (from a respondent pool that spans six continents) user preferences when proceeding to resolve cross-border disputes at the court, or arbitral and/or mediation forums; crucially, this study also examines user satisfaction levels at their chosen forum.

From October 2019, at the Centre of Construction Law, The Dickson Poon School of Law (KCL), Shouyu has worked on a PhD dissertation that focuses on commercial arbitration, private international law and comparative private law. Specifically, he conducts a doctrinal study about the limits to party autonomy in the commercial conflict of laws, focusing on how dispute resolution provisions may be ousted. His research would also cover the interpretation (and ousting, in some jurisdictions) of co-existing and conflicting jurisdiction and arbitration clauses from a comparative perspective, across major common law and civilian law traditions. This research is fully funded by the Centre of Construction Law (Nash Research Scholarship), and partly funded by the Society of Construction Law (Frances Paterson Scholarship). 

Shouyu enjoys reading outside the confines of his areas of experties, and he takes an enthusiastic and lively interest in deep discussions with his colleagues and fellow doctoral students in Singapore over and across broad topics, such as jurisprudence, contract theory, Chinese economic and investment treaty law, commercial trusts, the private international law aspect of cross-border data protection mechanisms, and many more.
