Toby Prevost was appointed in May 2020 to the newly created "Nightingale-Saunders Chair of Complex Clinical Trials and Statistics", and Director of the Nightingale-Saunders Clinical Trials and Epidemiology Unit, at King's College London.

He was previously (2016-2020) a Chair in Clinical Trials and Medical Statistics at Imperial College London, leading Statistics in the Imperial Clinical Trials Unit; and Reader (2009-2012) then Professor (2012-2015) of Medical Statistics at King's College London. Toby joined King's in an academic post from 2009 from the University of Cambridge, where he worked in the nationwide Health and Lifestyle Survey multidiciplinary team (1991-3, Research Assistant), underook statistical consulting in the "CAMS" Centre for Applied Medical Statistics (1996-2002, Research Associate).

Funding from the MRC (through a Complex Interventions group co-operative grant led by Prof Ann-Louise Kinmonth) enabled secondment to work in statistical research (clustering in trials, and meta-analysis for complex intervention development) in the Cambridge MRC Biostatistics Unit (2002-6, Senior Research Scientist), with Prof Simon Thompson and Prof David Spiegelhalter.

Toby contributed to complex intervention trials in the University of Cambridge's General Practice and Primary Care Research Unit (2000-9, Senior Research Associate from 2002) and was a Senior Medical Statistician within the CAMS consulting unit (2006-2009).

Toby's degrees were at the University of Southampton: BSc in Mathematics with Statistics (1990), MSc in Statistics with Applications in Medicine (1991), and PhD in Social Statistics (1996) - multilevel modelling of child mortality (Developing Bayesian approaches to estimating the predictors, and comparing these to classical methods).

Toby has contributed in an advisory capacity as a member on NICE advisory committees examining and interpeting published research evidence for national guidance: NICE Public Health Interventions Advisory Committee (2008-2013); NICE Public Health Advisory Committee (2013-2020); Expert Panel Member of the SACN (Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition) with NICE Rapid Guideline for Vitamin D and Covid-19 (2020).

He has contributed also at the early stages of research, as a member of NIHR and other Funding Committees for health research: NIHR Public Health Research Funding Committee (2014-2020); NIHR Covid-19 Recovery and Learning Funding Committee (2020); Cancer Research UK Prevention & Population Expert Review Panel (2021); European Funding Board for sub-macular haemorrhage for EURETINA/Fight for Sight.

Toby has received support from the NIHR in granted studies and has contributed to NIHR: NIHR Public Health Research Applications and Design Advisor (2020-2023), London NIHR Research Design Service advisor (2011-2015 and 2022-2023); Independent Advisory Board member for the NIHR Central-region PHIRST CONNECT (Public Health Interventions Responsive Studies Team, 2021 to date); and has accepted invitations to be an independent member of 25 trial oversight committees for NIHR-funded clinical trials committees around the country since 2009.
