Research interests (short)

Heart disease and cancer are the leading cause of death in developed countries. Limitations of current cancer therapies include nonspecific delivery, poor biodistribution of drugs, and lack of an effective modality for tracking delivery and monitoring treatment response. The aim of my project is therefore to develop and validate multifunctionalised magnetic nanoparticles (MF-MNP) to selectively target and monitor delivery and treatment response of MNPs by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MNPs can be used as contrast agents and magnetic heating inductors. Moreover, magnetic nanoparticles can be functionalised with ligands to increase their affinity towards cancer. Nanoparticles thus can be used simultaneously as functional nanocarriers and heating inductors by means of a rapidly alternating magnetic field to provide a combined therapeutic modality. Our focus is on pancreatic and breast cancer.
