Research interests

Rod’s work focuses on democratic theory and practice, particularly participatory and deliberative democracy.  He has published work on areas including citizen participation in democracy, democratic reform and the role played by voluntary organisations in shaping and delivering public services. His latest book, ‘Rethinking Civic Participation in Theory and Practice (Palgrave) investigates the relationship between participation and deprivation. 

His forthcoming book ‘Democracy: Idea, Practice and Object’ (Palgrave) provides an account of democracy which relates democratic theory to the objects and devices humans have devised to make real democratic ideas, exploring this perspective through cases drawn from throughout human history.
