Sally Barrington trained in Nuclear Medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals and was appointed as Professor of PET imaging in 2016. Her clinical experience encompasses all aspects of PET-CT including oncology, neurology, cardiology and infection/inflammation using a variety of tracers.
She was awarded a National Institute for Health Research and Social Care (NIHR) Research Professorship in December 2017.
Her research professor programme (funded NIHR) focuses on using PET to improve outcomes in cancer. It includes clinical trials exploring PET to risk and response adapt in lymphomas, enabling better targeting of therapy according to tumour biology, using PET to guide advanced radiotherapy and improving PET interpretation, including exploration of AI approaches. She is currently imaging PI for 4 late phase multicentre trials and 2 funded trials in set-up.
She co-leads the UK PET Core imaging lab with Prof Paul Marsden with a research network of over 50 imaging centres, http://www.ncri-pet.org.uk/.
She leads the clinical translation of the MITHRAS programme (funded EPSRC 2019-24) to translate novel tracers into clinic, https://www.mithrasprogramme.org/.
Harmonised standards for performing and reporting PET developed at KCL within Prof Barrington’s group included a 5-point reporting scale, which has become the international standard for response assessment in lymphoma, referred to as the ‘Deauville criteria’ and incorporated in the Lugano classification.
She is first author of International Conference on Malignant Lymphoma (ICML) guidelines for staging and response assessment in lymphoma and co-author of European Guidelines for Tumour Imaging with FDG PET-CT. She has ~150 peer reviewed publications.
Other activities:
Member of the Scientific Committee for international workshops on PET in lymphoma, European Lymphoma Institute, Lecturer on European Society of Oncology Programme awarding the Certificate of Competence in lymphoma, Steering Committee for PETRA consortium investigating PET as a biomarker of response to lymphoma therapy funded by the Dutch Cancer Society.
Member of Cancer Research UK Expert Review Panel and Medical Research Council Confidence in Concept Kings Health Partners Challenge Fund Panel, Chair of the NIHR Academy Involvement Group, Chair of the Radiation Safety Committee of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
