Abstract

This essay argues three main points: first, the acknowledgement of a change in the 1940s Peruvian poetics that reflects a Pan Hispanic change in the literature in Spanish language as well as a global change in the ways in which society and human nature was so far understood; second, the identification of more than one manifestation of such change, including here, by 1950, the hegemonic visibility of a particular prosaism; and, third, the presence, by mid-1940s of a modernisation project that inserts Peruvian poetry within cosmopolitan culture while constructs a model of national identity that is dynamic, multicultural and anchored in its pre-Columbian legacy.
