Personal profile

Biographical details

I am Professor of Biological Psychiatry at King’s College London heading Genetics Working Groups on large international neuroimaging x genetics studies of adolescents, IMAGEN and Consortium on Vulnerability to Externalizing Disorders and Addictions (c-VEDA). I am also member of the international Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis consortium (ENIGMA), leading the ENIGMA-Epigenetics Working Group.

I have been involved in research on genetic control of biological functions in systems of increasing complexity for many years. My main current research themes combine Magnetic Resonance Imaging with genetics and other ‘omics analyses to investigate brain-behaviour relationships and understand why some people are at risk of developing neuropsychiatric disorders and not others.

A more recent focus of my research is to understand how and why some people develop an eating disorder, and others do not. We address this by investigating the development, aetiology and core psychopathology across eating disorders and their comorbidities, applying Big Data methods to data collected from a longitudinal population cohort (IMAGEN) and clinical samples of patients diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia Nervosa (ESTRA study).

Research interests

  • Eating disorders: aetiology and underlying disease mechanisms
  • Predicting life and health outcomes with longitudinal data
  • Genomic bases of brain structure and function
  • Aetiology of reinforcement-related disorders
